biography

possums mugTeresa's innate passion for art was influenced by her father, the well- respected artist Hong-Zhang Dong. From the age of five, taught her both calligraphy and traditional Chinese art. During the Cultural Revolution in China all academic studies were terminated, so Teresa's dreams of a formal art education were shattered. She continued to study with her father as well as privately under one of China's foremost masters, Zhong-Zhou Cheng, who was a professor of architecture at Tong Ji University in Shanghai. Later on, using her attic as her studio, Teresa studied western drawing extensively. In 1980, the U.S. Consul General in Shanghai was so impressed with the Chinese painting that Teresa presented, that he granted her a student visa to the United States.
In order to establish financial independence once she was living in the U.S. As a self taught fashion designer, Teresa formed her own company and developed a revolutionary washable silk product for her first collection of women's sports wear under the Usagi label; The collection was well received, and within ten years it was being sold by over one thousand boutiques and major stores nationwide. Commercial success was rewarding, but not satisfying for Teresa; she retired from the fashion industry in 1996 to pursue her painting
Living in California provided her with a rich landscape for her plein-air oil paintings which invites the observer to see a subject portrayed forever at a particular moment in time. Teresa's use color in her work is sensitive, and her interpretation of life's details and nature is evocative.
Teresa's work has been shown throughout the United States and she has been recognized with many awards. Her works reside in collections internationally.
